Appearance
Brick-red - almost tawny.
Nose
Smokey and savoury, giving way to chutney and preserved cherries and blackberries. Some liquorice and a trace of green pepper.
Palate
Medium body. Slightly raisiny but otherwise lacking fruit on the palate. Plenty of caramel and butterscotch, traces of liquorice, mildly tannic and reasonable acidity.
Overall
San Juan produces some great Syrahs, and a couple of years ago this might have been one of them. Now, though, there's not enough left in it to justify the price tag.
