Appearance
Light, clear ruby with brick hues.
Nose
Fresh and forward with blackcurrants, green peppers, oaky characters of caramel, sawdust and wood shavings. Underlying crisp minerality of damp river-stones.
Palate
Fairly light-bodied. Warm impression (14.5% alcohol) with spicy blackcurrant jams, black pepper, and cinnamon. Suggestions of liquorice, mocha, and a green bell pepper acidity, with mildly aggressive wood tannins.
Overall
Perhaps slightly over-oaked (12 months French oak, first use), and a shade too hot on the finish, but otherwise excellent. There is undeniably a lot of wine in every glass. A year or two for the tannins to soften and the oak to integrate a little more into the abundant fruit, and this could lift up a notch or two yet. Great value.
