Appearance
Clear but dullish dark ruby red.
Nose
Red fruit - especially red currants, red pums, a boysenberry sweetness. Faint traces of vanilla, clove, and liquorice.
Palate
Light to medium body. Red currants and cranberries, but lacking fruit body or intensity of flavour. Touch of pencil shaving oak character, and some mild and dry wood tannins on a reasonable finish, where a gentle black pepper spiciness reveals. Mild, fairly balanced fruit acidity.
Overall
There's nothing wrong with this Syrah per sé - the problem is simply that it lacks enough of anything to give it any character or appeal. The fruit is a bit thin, the acidity and tannins mild, the oak influence subtle almost to the point of being absent. As long as Callia are making great San Juan Syrah for a third of the price, this just can't compete.
